What is a renewal payment, and when can it be taken?

A renewal payment is a payment the consumer could avoid by ending the subscription. Under the rules, a consumer can't be made liable for a renewal payment before the contract period it covers has started.

What does “Renewal payments” mean?

Renewal payments determine when reminder notices are needed. The rules also say that a contract term is of no effect to the extent it makes the consumer liable for a renewal payment before the first day of the renewed period. For example, if a contract started on the 15th, the renewal can't be charged before the 15th. Traders can still let consumers choose a later payment date.

How does it relate to football membership?

Clubs that like to collect renewals early, before the season starts or ahead of the official renewal date, need to check this against the membership term. If a membership runs from 1 July, the auto-renewal charge for next season can't be taken before 1 July. That affects cash-flow planning and how early-bird renewal offers are structured.
