Membership and subscription glossary

What does it mean to exit (bring to an end) a subscription contract?

Stopping a membership from renewing, which the rules say must be as easy as signing up.

TL;DR

Exiting, or bringing a contract to an end, means the consumer stops the subscription from auto-renewing. Traders must let consumers do this at any time, in a straightforward way and without unnecessary steps.

What does “Exiting a subscription contract” mean?

The draft guidance says exit should be as easy as signing up. Consumers must be able to end a contract at any time, including immediately after joining. Asking for account details to identify the contract is likely to be fine, but a compulsory "why are you leaving?" form is unlikely to be acceptable. Consumers can also end a contract by giving the trader a clear statement.

When a consumer ends a contract, they keep receiving what they paid for until the end of the current period. This is different from the statutory right to cancel, which ends the contract immediately.

A trader who doesn't provide straightforward exit gives the consumer a right to cancel and a possible refund.

How does it relate to football membership?

A member who switches off renewal in April keeps their benefits until the end of the season. Clubs shouldn't make fans phone the ticket office or wait in a queue to stop renewal, but they can (and should) use this moment to remind fans what they will lose, such as loyalty points or a waiting list position, provided this doesn't make leaving harder.

How Limio helps

Limio self-service lets members manage or turn off renewal in their account in a few clicks, with optional, non-blocking save offers, and sends every change to the CRM.

This is a plain-English summary of the subscription rules in Part 4, Chapter 2 of the DMCCA and the draft Consumer Subscription Contracts (Cancellation and Information) Regulations 2026, based on the draft government guidance published in October 2026. The regulations are still subject to parliamentary approval. It is not legal advice.
