What is the right to cancel a subscription under UK law?

The statutory right to cancel a subscription, as distinct from simply stopping it renewing.

TL;DR

The right to cancel is a statutory right to end a subscription contract immediately, either during a cooling-off period or because the trader breached certain duties. It is different from “bringing a contract to an end”, which stops future renewals.

What does “Right to cancel” mean?

Consumers have a statutory right to cancel a subscription contract:

Cancellation takes effect when the consumer gives a clear statement. No fee or penalty can be charged. For a breach, the right lasts 12 months from the relevant date, and the consumer may be entitled to a refund of payments made from that date. Refunds are due within 14 days.

How does it relate to football membership?

For clubs, the risk is less about fans cancelling in the first 14 days and more about the breach route: a missed reminder notice or an awkward cancellation process can let a member cancel and claim back payments made since the breach. Getting the operational basics right protects revenue.

It also matters which term clubs use. When a fan "cancels" in the everyday sense, they are usually bringing the contract to an end: benefits continue to the end of the paid period and no refund is due.

How Limio helps

Limio keeps a full record of what each member was shown and charged, runs renewal communications on schedule and gives fans a straightforward way to end their membership online, which helps clubs avoid the breaches that trigger this right.

This is a plain-English summary of the subscription rules in Part 4, Chapter 2 of the DMCCA and the draft Consumer Subscription Contracts (Cancellation and Information) Regulations 2026, based on the draft government guidance published in October 2026. The regulations are still subject to parliamentary approval. It is not legal advice.
