What is key and full pre-contract information?

What a club must tell fans, and how, before they sign up to an auto-renewing membership.

TL;DR

Key pre-contract information is the essential information about payments, renewal and exit that must be shown prominently just before a consumer signs up. Full pre-contract information adds wider details and can be linked to online, but must also be sent afterwards on a durable medium.

What does “Pre-contract information (key and full)” mean?

Key pre-contract information must be given all together, separately from other information, as close as possible to the point of purchase, and online it must be readable without clicking a link. It includes:

  • that the contract will continue, with ongoing payments, unless the consumer acts
  • any minimum period, and details of any free or discounted concessionary period, including when and how much the first full charge will be
  • how often payments are taken and the minimum amount each time, plus the monthly equivalent if payments aren't monthly (e.g. £120 a year = £10 a month)
  • the minimum total the consumer will pay, and any right to change prices
  • how to end the contract and any notice needed
  • when reminder notices will be sent
  • a summary of cooling-off rights

Full pre-contract information adds the main characteristics of the product, the trader's identity and contact details, extra charges, complaints handling, full cooling-off details and consumer rights. Online, it can be made available by a clear, direct link, but must then be sent on a durable medium (e.g. email) before supply begins.

How does it relate to football membership?

For a club, this information belongs on the membership checkout, next to the join button: the annual price and its monthly equivalent, that the membership auto-renews each season, when renewal reminders go out and how to switch off renewal. Under the Consumer Rights Act, most of this information becomes part of the contract, so it can't later be changed without the fan's agreement.

How Limio helps

Limio checkouts are configurable without development work, so clubs can show key pre-contract information beside the purchase button for each tier, link to the full information, and automatically trigger a confirmation email that includes it.

This is a plain-English summary of the subscription rules in Part 4, Chapter 2 of the DMCCA and the draft Consumer Subscription Contracts (Cancellation and Information) Regulations 2026, based on the draft government guidance published in October 2026. The regulations are still subject to parliamentary approval. It is not legal advice.
